~Game DevLog~

Introduction:

This is an introduction for my game, The Missing Pieces. It is a 3D, narrative and exploration game, where you are an old man who has returned home from somewhere, you are confused and feel lost, almost like something is missing. The main goal of the game is to explore and discover what is causing this missing feeling inside of you.

Mechanics and Basic Summary:

The mechanics for this game is that there are random items scattered around the house and as you interact with them, slowly you begin to connect the pieces together. These objects will stand out compared to the surrounding area, so it will be easy for the player to understand what is interactive and what isn’t. There are six rooms in this house and each room will have a single object that once you interact with it, it will read out a text that reminds the character of someone, his wife. Once you have explored the house, there is a back door in the kitchen that leads to the back garden, the place where the character you play as, remembers the memories of his late wife who had recently passed away. The reason he forgot about his wife was that his brain did this as a coping mechanism to protect him from the stress of his wife's passing.

Development Progress:

I have spent many hours trying to bring my game to life, I had brainstormed ideas for a missing themed game. There were ideas for something being missing or the idea I stuck with was missing something, which in the game is the character missing his wife, her memories. Once I had a solid plan for this game, I began the process of designing and developing it:

  • Creating the level design for my game which is of a small cottage, I tried to keep it simple.
  • Added the mechanics to the game by coding the interactive objects.
  • Added movement for the player, to move forward and backwards, and to be able to look around using their mouse.
  • Create a final scene when you interact with the door in the kitchen.

Conclusion:

The process of designing this game was fun as I was able to build on certain skills through trial and error. I made an attempt at creating my first 3D game, so problems had occurred but it was a good learning opportunity to experiment with a new style of game designing.
